NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite missions will prepare for humans' return to the moon. The Field Trip to the Moon: LRO/LCROSS Edition includes the activities from the original Field Trip to the Moon guide plus activities relating to these two moon missions. The LRO/LCROSS activities allow participants to explore lunar stratigraphy (caused by lava flows), impact craters, the moon's history, spacecraft design in which students build models of the LRO out of edible or non-edible materials, and the future of lunar exploration.

Field Trip to the Moon is a virtual journey created using NASA engineering models and scientific data. Like NASA's astronauts, student will come face-to-face with the challenges and excitement of launching from Earth's surface and journeying through space to land on the moon. Along the way, students will discover some of the differences between Earth and the moon and what makes Earth unique and habitable.

  • Introduction -- A short historical introduction to human exploration.

  • Feature -- The complete journey -- from launch, through Earth orbit, to moon orbit and landing (no narration).

  • LRO/LCROSS Mission -- Short media segments that introduce NASA's mission, including animations and interviews with NASA scientists.

  • Extras -- Short media segments including moon formation, Apollo landing sites, future lunar landing animation and moon trivia questions.

  • Field Trip to the Moon LRO/LCROSS Edition Informal Educator’s Guide (PDF).

  • Field Trip to the Moon Formal Educator’s Guide (PDF).

NASA, CORE and the American Museum of Natural History have worked together to provide educators with toolboxes, which will bring this "Field Trip" to life. These toolboxes match up with each of the six science-based team explorations: Ecosystem, Engineering, Geology, Habitat, Medical and Navigation.
